it is accepted practice to use .COM for personal web sites as well
.NET - domains are primarily used to denote networked systems - be it a network

Question 6. Are all registration agreements the same?Answer:
Of course not! While it would be nice if a domain, once bought, was your forever, this is not necessarily the case - which is why careful shopping is essential. Be absolutely certain to research what you're getting before you pay. Many registrars reserve the right to revoke your domain if you use it for illegal purposes (such as spamming), or for any other practice deemed "unacceptable" by the registrar (which can mean trouble for an adult site). Be sure to find out exactly what the registrar in question finds "unacceptable" before signing.
Furthermore, some registrar contracts contain clauses that allow the registrar to delete your domain name and make changes to the registration agreement at any time, and for no apparent reason, the implication being that the domain name is owned by the registrar, not the applicant. The point is that every registrar needs to be researched carefully.
